Struggling with Straight, Fine Hair?đżđ§´đŹď¸
Here are the tried-and-true simple hair products/ tips and tricks I actually swear by for fine, low porosity hair. đ

đLet's dive into this:
If you have fine, straight hair, then my friendâyou already know the struggle. Iâve tried everything. Every âvolumizingâ shampoo, every âweightlessâ conditioner, every TikTok-recommended miracle product. And yet⌠the result was always the same:
⨠Flat.
⨠Oily the next day.
⨠Weirdly greasy-looking by midday.
⨠Or so heavy my hair felt like it just gave up halfway through the day.
And don't even get me started on dry shampoo.
I know, I knowâsome girls swear by it. But for me? Itâs been nothing short of a disaster. It made the oiliness worse, gunked up my scalp, and left me looking like I hadnât washed my hair in a month. Not cute.
The truth is, I hated my hair when I was younger. Every hairstyle I wanted to copy was made for thick-haired girlsâthe ones with perfect curls and ponytails thicker than my fist. I could never understand why those styles looked so good on them, and so⌠wrong on me. That was, until I discovered hair textures, densities, and typesâand realized real quick that Iâd basically pulled the short straw.
Honestly, devastating for a girl who wanted to be nothing more than Rapunzel.
My hair wasnât thick enough to hold volume. It got oily way too fast. And no matter how many products I tried, I always ended up feeling... defeated.
And broke.
Because letâs be real: Iâm not made of money, and neither are you. (Who is right now, honestly?) I can't afford to drop $60â$70 on shampoo and conditioner alone. Thatâs groceries. Thatâs gas. Thatâs just too much.
So if nothing was cutting it⌠where could I turn?
Well, I started looking at places where fine-haired girls actually seem to have it figured out. Enter: Japan.
Japanese haircare is known for being gentler, with less harsh ingredients than most American brands. (Look it up, not joking-there are chemicals banned in the EU and Japan that the FDA still lets slide here. Crazy.) So, I tried a lot of different brands, most of them lighter, more nourishing, and way more respectful to sensitive scalps.
But after all that trial and error, I finally found my holy grail.
⨠Tsubaki Premium Volume & Repair Shampoo and Conditioner â¨
This magical little duo changed everything.
Not only is it affordable (around $30 total for the shampoo and conditioner), it gives me what Iâve been chasing for years:
âď¸ Volume that doesnât fall flat by lunch
âď¸ No greasy buildup the next day
âď¸ Lightweight moisture that doesnât weigh my hair down
âď¸ Soft, touchable, healthy-looking strands
Basically? It works. And it doesnât break the bank.
Plus, the TSUBAKI Premium Hair Mask is a nice third addition to the shampoo and conditioner set. (Just be sure to use it only on the ends of you're hair ;)
Now, Iâve seen this brand go viral recently on TikTok, but let me just sayâI was using this baby before the hype. So let me give you the real insight on why sheâs so good, and not just because someone online told you to buy it.
đThe Science:
First: I have low porosity hairâand chances are, if youâve got fine hair, you do too. If youâre not sure what that means, I highly recommend trying the water cup test:
Just fill a glass with water, pluck out a clean strand of your hair, and drop it in.
If it floats? Low porosity.
If it sinks? High porosity.
Easy.
But okayâwhat does âlow porosityâ even mean?
It means your hair cuticle (the outer layer of your hair) is tightly packed, making it really hard for moisture and products to absorb. The upside? Once your hair does absorb moisture, it holds onto it pretty well.
The downside?
Without the right products, your hair is basically stuck in limboâoily and weighed down at the roots, but crispy and dry at the ends. (You know, the entire problem we had to begin with.) Cute, right?
So what happens is, these heavy products just sit on top of the hair instead of sinking in. It causes build-up, that heavy greasy look, and leaves your strands feeling gross and dry at the same time.
What low porosity hair needs is a gentle, penetrating cleanser that can care for a sensitive scalp, nourish the ends, and actually absorb into your hair without causing that greasy film just sitting on it.
And thatâs exactly why I love the Tsubaki Premium Volume & Repair line.
It is literally designed for fine hair.
I feel so seen.
This set delivers moisture to the roots without suffocating them, and actually penetrates the hair and gives you that soft, voluminous, healthy shine weâre all chasing. Itâs gentle enough for sensitive scalps (hi, me again), but strong enough to repair and strengthen the hair you already have.
Inside, youâll find ingredients like:
Taurine
Aspartic acid
Polyquaternium-11
I know, those sound like a chemistry quizâbut trust me, theyâre all great for hair strength, resilience, and elasticity. Basically? They help your hair bounce back.
đMy Basic Hair Care Routine Items/Costs:
Okay, we all know hair care isnât just shampoo and conditioner. (At least, I hope you know thatâespecially if youâre as chronically online as I am đ
).
But if not? No need to fret. Thatâs what Iâm here for! đ
And honestly, Hair care can be confusing regardless because you don't always know the exact steps and order to do them in order to see the right results. Like I don't just want a product, I want to know where it can fit in with my schedule and current routine.
Letâs start with my go-to basics for shower and post-shower hair care:
Davines Melu Hair Shield, Heat Protection, Soft And Shiny Results For All Hair Types This is simply a heat protectant for my hair since I style with heat after. Warning, this is expensive, (Around 40 bucks) but I only use 1 or 2 sprits so it lasts my finer hair a LONG time. And when I say a long time, I mean around a year.
AND it's the only protectant I've found that doesn't weigh down my fine hair with a film.Kracie Ichikami Hair Essence, 3.38 fl oz. Hair Serum for Damaged Hair (Around 22 dollars for a 2-pack. I use this only a small amount on mostly my ends to help detangle my hair.)
Kerastase Elixir Ultime L'Huile Original Hair Oil For All Hair Types (Also expensive. BUT I bought the 30 mL one for around 30 dollars, and since I only use one or a half a pump on my ends, it's lasted me a long time)
đ How I Wash & Care for My Fine Hair â Step by Step!
Alright, now that weâve talked about the actual products, letâs get into the routine itself. Because knowing what to use is great⌠but knowing how to use it? Thatâs the real game-changer â¨
đ§ But first...a Little Backstory...
So, Iâve actually struggled with hair loss when I was younger (a story for another day đ ), and that experience led me to totally rethink how I wash my hair. Now I always flip my head upside down and wash my hair that wayâlike this:
đ Flip your hair forward, lean over, and wash from the front.
Why? Because this technique puts way less strain on the weakest parts of our scalpâthe sides and hairline.
Wet hair is super fragile, and constantly pulling it back can cause even more breakage, especially in fine hair like mine (and probably yours đ).
𧴠Step One: Shampoo!
Groundbreaking, I know đ But hereâs the thingâbe gentle.
Use your fingertips (not your nails) to lightly scrub your scalp and really massage the shampoo in. If you use a lot of styling products, you can double-shampoo to make sure everythingâs clean and fresh.
đŚ Step Two: Conditioner
I apply conditioner only to my ends, then do a quick pass over my bangs and the top of my head just to give those areas a tiny bit of moistureânothing heavy. (Though, honestly, with the Tsubaki Volume & Repair, you could condition your whole head and still be fineâitâs that lightweight.)
Let it sit for at least 30 seconds to a minute while you vibe out with your soap or sing into your shampoo bottle.
Then rinse it out well!
đââď¸ Step Three: Hair Mask (Optional!)
I donât mask every wash day, but when my ends are feeling dry or I just want that extra softness, Iâll go in with a nourishing hair mask.
Same rules as conditioner: only on the ends! I keep a claw clip in the shower so I can twist my hair up while the mask sits. Then I go about my businessâshaving, washing my body, contemplating lifeâand rinse the mask out after 1 to 3 minutes.
𪼠Step Four: Detangle, Protect, Dry
After towel drying your hair (gently!!), spray in your heat protectant and a little detangler/serum, focusing on the ends. Then grab the one brush I swear every fine-haired girl needs:
đ Tangle Teezer Fine & Fragile Ultimate Detangler Brush
This brush is a lifesaverâgentle, effective, and perfect for fragile strands.
Detangle with care, start from your ends to the scalp, and then dry your hair however you usually doâwhatever works for you!
đŤ Step Five: Hair Oil (But Chill!)
I know, I know⌠after all that effort to not have oily hair, the idea of putting oil in it feels wrong. But hear me out:
You donât need a lot. I mean it.
Just a half-pump maxârub it between your fingers, and finger-comb it through the ends only. Thatâs it.
Overdoing it is way too easy with fine hair, so go light and your hair will thank you đ
And thatâs it! Thatâs my full wash-day routine for fine, flat, fussy hair. It took me years of trial and error, but now I finally have a routine that works with my hairânot against it.
Keep in mind, this is what worked for me. Everyoneâs on their own journeyâbut if even one thing here helps you feel more confident or just a little more like you, then thatâs a win in my book. đ
For all my girls who have been struggling with fine, straight, oily-prone hair, and feel like youâve tried everything under the sun (with nothing to show for it but a cluttered shower and a sad ponytail), I see you. I am you.
And I promiseâyou will love your hair again!đ
